1466-8 - Looff - SOLD
Circa 1890s carved and painted carousel figure from the Charles Looff carousel works in Brooklyn, NY. The all wood prancing goat with glass eyed tucked head and long carved horns bears a saddle having a tasseled cantle girthed over a bordered blanket, all secured by a fanciful breastband and breeching featuring tassels and classic Looff keepers enclosing starburst jewels. The head is restrained by a bridle having another starburst jeweled keeper and tassel. Originally aboard a carousel at Midland Beach, Staten Island, NY, then moved to Keansburg, NJ in 1913. A depiction of the goat appears in the Washington DC National Gallery's 1935-1942 "Index of American Design" project. Very good condition, 64 long x 60 high.
